Understanding Rapid Charging Speeds
We use the Department for Transport power bands from its charging infrastructure statistics for 1 July 2026, consistent with our statistics guide:
- Rapid: 50kW to under 150kW.
- Ultra-rapid: 150kW and above.
Look for the power rating on the charger and check your vehicle handbook for its charging limit and supported connector. Use the car's charging display to check the session's progress instead of relying on a fixed time or range promise.
Where to Look for Rapid Chargers
- Motorway services: use our motorway listings as a starting point, then confirm the stop on the operator's map.
- Forecourts and charging hubs: check operator maps along your route and confirm access from your direction of travel.
- Retail parks and supermarket car parks: check the site's own information, the charger rating and parking conditions.
Before You Set Off
- Check your vehicle handbook for suitable charging targets and any battery pre-conditioning instructions.
- Check the operator's latest status information for the chosen charger. Keep enough charge to reach a backup stop.
- Confirm whether the unit accepts your payment card or requires an app or account. Set up any required account before travelling.
- Check the connector and power rating for the exact unit, rather than relying on the site's headline rating.
Check the Price Before Charging
Compare the tariff shown for your payment method with any subscription offer. Include the subscription fee, session fees and parking charges when deciding whether an offer suits your expected usage. Read the price on the unit or in the operator's app before confirming the session.
